Shi'oi Artesanías de Palma Real is an enterprise led by women artisans who make handmade crafts such as bracelets, necklaces, baskets, fans, seed earrings, vine brooms and basketwork. Through our handicrafts, we promote and give visibility to our ancestral culture, which we also share through dance, traditional cuisine and jungle tours. During these tours, we present timber and fruit trees, medicinal plants from our community, and perform arrow shooting demonstrations. In addition, we have a pilot plot of land without burning and we grow cocoa in a sustainable way. From Shi'oi we seek to strengthen the leadership of indigenous women, support the local economy, make our local knowledge visible and promote respectful practices with the territory through experiential tourism with identity.

From Shiói we plan the territory for the collection of seeds and other materials for the elaboration of handicrafts. The sale of our handicraft products is done to improve our economy, we are 35 members, each artisan collector is responsible for delivering 20 pieces monthly for the association which are marketed in craft fairs in which we participate. For women artisans it is important to have training and education processes to improve leadership and have better results in the processes that are carried out in our community.
Context: Shi'oi Artesanías de Palma Real is located in the Tambopata province, Tambopata district, on the right bank of the lower Madre de Dios River. The collective territory of the native Ese Eja people covers 8,539 hectares. Among the main conflicts faced by this community is mining, both legal and illegal, which has contaminated their main water source, affecting the health of the population and altering the food chain on which their daily diet depends. This problem represents an urgent challenge to raise awareness within the community and promote sustainable alternatives that guarantee a good life, since ecosystems are being destroyed, compromising the future of new generations. Another growing aspect is the impact of climate change on the production of fruits and plants, as well as on the flow of rivers and streams. Currently, during the dry season, the Madre de Dios River has reached historically low levels. Added to this are new forms of commodification of nature, such as REDD+ mechanisms, through which large CO₂ emitting industries pay for polluting, without stopping the damage, which ends up deepening the violations to local communities.
